The first 40 days. Franks own Diary
After being driven back to Utah Frank has crossed back into Nevada!
As advised last week, now that Frank has access to improved transport it is making his route much more difficult to follow. However, whilst he has played it down a little I believe his feet are giving him a bit more trouble than during the rest of the trip, mainly due to a slight injury sustained a few weeks ago and this may be contributing to this route diversity.
He is still on what he calls the loneliest highway in the world, the dead straight Lincoln Highway. He has had some good walking in good conditions at least 4 days this week covering a good 80 miles. He has also made a detour, starting by a drive up to Salt Lake City at 240 miles each way to meet daughter Lucy who has stopped over on her way back to the UK, landing at Salt lake City and re-joining her journey home at Reno on the 5th September. He also visited the famous Bonneville salt flats, famous for the world record attempts and encrusted with a layer of salt. Very white and very bright in the sun.
He now starts his day at 0645 with the sunrise so he can beat the worst heat of the day. This morning it was nearly freezing when he got up, but he is at nearly 6500 feet in a desert so this is not unusual. However next week he will be in a more traditional sandier desert at a lower altitude so conditions may be less hospitable.
Frank has got used to his walk so it is difficult for him to imagine not having it facing him each day, and he cannot imagine giving up at this stage. Once Lucy has left on the 5th September, he will be thinking of the 15th when Carole, his wife is joining him at Lake Tahoe for the final stretch across the final State. He may make the Golden Gate by his birthday on the 8th October!
