The first 40 days. Franks own Diary
6 Months and a day since the start, Frank has seen the Golden gate bridge, goal of his mission ahead!!
However, it is still rather a long way ahead, up to 50 miles! He and Carole climbed a 4000ft mountain in a national park in order to see the view and they were just about able to make out the distinctive landmark alongside skyscrapers in the distance. They had a very clear day to be able to see so far, despite temperatures still being in the low 80's F. The country they have travelled through since Sacramento has reminded Frank of his native Norfolk, dead flat arable land. However by means of a diversion to gain the most out of their last few weeks in the USA they diverted a little off the trail into the national park to gain some altitude and see more scenery. They are slowly winding down the pace as they approach the outskirts of San Francisco and, Frank is sounding very cheerful and bouyant perhaps delighted to have Carole with him after such a long time apart and confident they will reach their goal by Monday or Tuesday. There is talk of a possible radio broadcast live from (near) the bridge when he arrives.
The last week they have spent 4 nights under canvas and 3 in motels. Next week they hope to be in the White Horse in Frank's home village of Upton with his great adventure behind him. Perhaps we should have named the site White-Horse to whitehouse? Slide shows and perhaps a book are perhaps still to come. Keep visiting this site for updates and photos that come to hand.
This may be the last update on this epic trip. We hope again that the America that Frank leaves is not too different from the one he started in and that things there get back to normal in time. I know Frank has grown to develop a strong feeling for it during the last 6 months and will miss it when he gets home. Who knows he could already be planning his next walk, maybe up the Amazon? Thanks to everyone who has visited the site over the last 6 months.
